15 TV Shows That Have 100% On Rotten Tomatoes (And 5 With 0%)

15 TV Shows That Have 100% On Rotten Tomatoes (And 5 With 0%)
by Gregory Thompson – on Jul 27, 2018 in Lists

Rotten Tomatoes is a website that aggregates reviews from critics in print magazines and those from online sources. Those reviews make up the Tomatometer and scores on a scale of 0% to 100%.

Rotten Tomatoes has a separate Audience Score, which often has a disparity from the Tomatometer. This can happen when critics look at a movie or TV show with a technical or “professional” eye while the general viewer or fan bases their review or score on how well it entertained them. This is the subjective world of Rotten Tomatoes.

You shouldn’t judge a movie or TV show based on the scores alone, but sometimes, when a TV show gets a 0%, it’s clear something is terribly wrong with the show. Keep in mind that a 0% TV show is very rare: only 5 shows have that percentage.

When a TV show hits all the right notes for critics, then the 100% Certified Fresh comes out. The writing, acting, themes, and plots all contribute to the praise received by the show. A 100% is not as rare as the 0% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it’s still extremely hard to get. You’ll find some shows have specific seasons that have reached 100% while previous seasons just missed the high marks.

Keep an open mind when you watch a TV show and don’t jump to good or bad conclusions until you’ve seen it all.

In the meantime, here’s 15 TV Shows That Have A 100% Score On Rotten Tomatoes (And 5 With 0%)

20 100%: Master of None

Aziz Ansari stars in Master of None as Dev Shah, about an Indian-American actor who goes through life with challenges ranging from love to getting jobs to racism.

Both seasons of Master of None have received 100% scores. The show has won 3 Emmys and a Golden Globe and nominated for many more awards ranging from acting and writing to music and directing.

Since 2015, the show has made it on to numerous Top Ten lists from websites, magazines, and newspapers all over the world and United States.

Season 3 is up in the air, as Ansari said, “I’ve got to become a different guy… I’ve got to get married or have a kid or something.”

19 100%: Fleabag

Fleabag is a comedy-drama written by Phoebe Waller-Bridge, and she stars in it also. Additionally, the show is based on her play of the same name. The play was written as a challenge from one of Waller-Bridge’s friend to create a short sketch of about 10 minutes for a storytelling night.

The protagonist, known only as Fleabag, deals with modern life in London: relationships, work, and friends. The show was originally on BBC Three, but soon, Amazon Video picked up the show and premiered it before the first series ended.

A second series is in the works, but no official date has been set.

It’s believed if everything goes well, the new series will premiere some time in 2019.

18 0%: Dads

Dads boasted a solid pedigree. Seth McFarlane was the executive producer, and the show starred Seth Green and Giovanni Ribisi. But one quick look at the premise - two successful owners of a video game company who are forced to have their dads live with them - and you knew the characters and plot lines were going to be predictable.

The characters weren't likable, and many of the jokes were too racist and vulgar even for the Fox network and McFarlane crowd.

From the premiere to week two, ratings fell drastically in the show's target demographic.

Even a talented supporting cast made up of Martin Mull, Peter Riegert, and Brenda Song couldn’t get Dads to 1%.

17 100%: White Collar

In White Collar, a con man is captured twice by the FBI. Aafter the second time, the con-man (Matt Bomer as Neal Caffrey) proposes a deal to help capture white collar criminals. The FBI Agent (Tim DeKay as Agent Peter Burke) agrees, and thus begins this police procedural drama.

Tiffani Thiessen and Hilarie Burton (One Tree Hill) also starred while Treat Williams, Mark Sheppard, Beau Bridges, Andrew McCarthy, and Emily Proctor (The West Wing, CSI: Miami) all had recurring and small supporting roles.

The show aired for 6 seasons from 2009 to 2014, and all 6 seasons have received 100% scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

White Collar has won acting awards, and been nominated for several other acting awards.

16 100%: Jane the Virgin

Jane the Virgin has aired for four seasons, with a fifth and final season forthcoming. Each season on The CW has garnered 100% scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

The biggest praise the show consistently receives is for its writing and Gina Rodriguez’s acting. Jane the Virgin has been nominated for nearly 100 awards since the first season and has won 30 of them. This includes Golden Globes, Peabodys, Golden Derbys, Imagens, and Young Artist Awards.

You can even read a tie-in novel, which is inspired by the book Jane actually writes in the TV show. It doesn’t include any of the Jane the Virgin characters but is based on the story of Jane and Michael.

15 100%: Dear White People

Dear White People has one of the biggest variances of the Tomatometer and Average Audience Score of any 100% TV shows on this list. The Audience Score currently sits at 65%.

The program is about a group of racially diverse students at a mostly-white Ivy League college try to find it and create their own paths while dealing with the racial tensions. Each episode focuses on a single student’s point-of-view.

At first, Dear White People was a movie. Then Netflix greenlit an adaptation into a series that still had the director and writer’s (Justin Simien) involvement. Soon after the 2nd season aired, Netflix renewed the TV show for a 3rd season. As of yet, no premiere dates have been announced.

14 0%: Charlie's Angels

ABC’s Charlie’s Angels had a short life in 2011. It took 4 episodes for the network to cancel this show. Although 13 episodes were ordered, only 8 were planned; 7 of 8 aired. The finale eventually aired on a channel in Poland and then on UK channels in January 2012.

Charlie’s Angels had plug-and-play plots with cast members that were great on other shows, but not this one. The campiness from the original TV show did not work here. Better writing could have saved the show, but it was too late. From overe 30 reviews, not one was positive.

The stars went on to better shows: Rachael Taylor in Jessica Jones, Annie Ilonzeh in Graceland and Empire, and Minka Kelly in The Path.

Featured Today Assassin's Creed: 10 Cities We Need To See Next (And 10 That Should Be Avoided) Star Wars: 20 Things Everyone Gets Wrong About The Sith 20 Hidden Rare Items In Video Games (And How To Find Them) 13 100%: Happy Valley

Happy Valley is a British crime drama about a Sergeant tasked to find kidnappers while dealing with the prison release of the man who impregnated her daughter.

Both seasons of Happy Valley have 100% scores on Rotten Tomatoes.

The program has won prestigious awards: a BAFTA award for the Best Drama Series and a TV Choice Award for Best New Drama (Sarah Lancashire also won a TV Choice Award for Best Actress.)

The show is returning for a 3rd series - with Lancashire coming back - but as of right now there is no date since some of the other actors and actresses have other commitments. You can currently watch Series 1 and 2 of Happy Valley on Netflix.

12 100%: Chewing Gum

Another British show that has 2 seasons of 100% scores is Chewing Gum. The main character, Tracey Gordon, is a religious, inexperience young woman obsessed with Beyoncé. Tracey's gold is to gain experience and find out what she’s missing with the world around her.

Chewing Gum produced awards for Michaela Coel (BAFTA’s Best Female Performance in a Comedy Programme, and Breakthrough Talent writing award). Coel stars in the show but is also the creator and writer. British TV’s Channel 4 said the show isn’t returning for a 3rd series, but Coel said through Twitter she intends one in the future.

Chewing Gum is considered a cringe comedy, a subset of sitcom that derives humor from socially awkward situations.

11 100%: Vida

Vida is a drama show airing on Starz. It’s based on Pour Vida, a short story by Richard Villegas Jr. Two sisters from Los Angeles’s East side are thrown back together in their old neighborhood to confront the past and who their mother was. The show premiered in May; season 1 is six episodes long.

Twenty-eight reviews give Vida a Certified Fresh rating at 100%.

The cast and themes have consistently been praised. Melissa Barrera, best known for her various roles in telenovas, stars as Lyn.

In June, Starz announced the Vida was renewed and will return for a 2nd season, but no dates have been released yet.

10 0%: Saint George

Starring George Lopez, David Zayas (of Dexter), and Danny Trejo, Saint George was included in a syndication plan for Lionsgate Television. This meant that if the show managed to meet specific ratings in the first 10-episode run, an additional 90 episodes would be ordered. Saint George didn’t come close to the target and was canceled after 1 season.

Rotten Tomatoes has some of the most negative reviews for the show. The consensus reads, “You’d need the patience of a saint to sit through an episode of Saint George, a tired sitcom with bad potty humor jokes and thin characters.”

The audience score sits at 33% but has just as scathing comments like “There’s no authentic life” and that it has “witless, gamy punchlines.”

9 100%: The Expanse (Season 3)

Across the board, The Expanse has received great scores from both critics and viewers alike. Good reviews and winning awards weren’t enough to keep SYFY from canceling it.

The good news is Amazon has picked up the show for a 4th season.

A successful crowdfunding campaign was set up to pay an airplane to fly the hashtag #SaveTheExpanse on a banner around the Amazon Studios.

As a whole, the show sits at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. Both the 1st and 2nd season are certified fresh with scores of 76% and 95% respectively. However, the 3rd season is currently at 100% with 13 reviews. Most likely it will receive the Certified Fresh icon.

Fans have agreed with the critics, with audience scores of 94% for season 1, 97% for both seasons 2 and 3.

8 100%: MST3K: The Return

MST3K: The Return founds its way to Netflix with 13 more episodes after almost 20 years since the original aired. With new characters and cameos (Wil Wheaton, Neil Patrick Harris), the cult classic lost nothing in the hiatus.

With over 25 critics’ reviews, the Tomatometer rests at 100%, certified fresh. Jonah Ray is the new Satellite of Love worker kidnapped by Kinga Forrester (Felicia Day) with the help of Frank (Patton Oswalt). The format remains the same: Jonah and his crew of robots - Tom Servo, Crow T. Robot, and Gypsy - are forced to watch terrible movies for our entertainment.

7 100%: 12 Monkeys (Season 4)

The time-traveling TV adaptation 12 Monkeys lasted 4 seasons on Syfy. The final fourth season recently ended on July 6, 2018. The show is very loosely based on the film of the same name, which premiered in 1995. That movie was based on a short film called La Jetee, which aired in 1962.

12 Monkeys' reviews only got better as the seasons progressed.

The final season earned a 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes. One reviewer said, “From the word go, the final season of 12 Monkeys pulls no punches. In fact, it raises the bar on ‘going there’ television."

When the concept of a 12 Monkeys TV show was announced, Terry Gilliam (involved with the movie), had major reservations about it.

6 0%: Hunters

Hunters was a Syfy TV series based on Whitley Strieber’s book, Alien Hunters. It starred Nathan Phillips and Britne Oldford as FBI agents who uncover a secret government organization.

The show was basically The X-Files with overly-dramatic action. Even when episodes were ordered, the cast wasn’t announced, which is almost the same as a movie not being seen by reviewers before the premiere.

Even with her experience with The Walking Dead and Fear the Walking Dead, executive producer Gale Anne Hurd couldn’t keep critics from panning the series. One reviewer stated it was “instantly forgettable.”

Hunters never made it past the first season, despite an okay audience score of 55%.

5  100%: Cobra Kai

Cobra Kai is a YouTube Premium show that takes places 30 years after the events in The Karate Kid. More specifically, after the tournament where Daniel “sweeps the leg!”

Johnny Lawrence wants redemption against Daniel, so he reopens his Cobra Kai dojo, which rekindles their rivalry from years ago.

With 35 reviews so far, the 100% on Rotten Tomatoes is a coup for YouTube.

Nostalgia and the passage of time give the writing a solid foundation for the sequel series. Cobra Kai respects what came before instead of being a rehash or complete reboot.

The Audience Score is at 95% as of this writing. The second season is planned to premiere in 2019.

4 100%: Catastrophe

by Amazon, Catastrophe is about Rob and Sharon Norris who enter into a relationship after Sharon gets pregnant during their fling when Rob visits London on a short business trip. Sharon is a London schoolteacher and Rob is an American ad man from Boston.

The show originally aired on Channel 4 in the UK. All 3 seasons so far have received 100% scores, and the 4th is expected to do the same. Catastrophe has one a Bafta and has been nominated for a variety of awards.

Carrie Fischer and Mark Bonnar are supporting cast members of the show. Fisher passed away soon after the 3rd series completed filming. Catastrophe was her last TV role; the last episode of series 3 is dedicated to her.

3 100%: The Affair (Season 4)

The Affair had a strong 1st and 2nd season, but then faltered a little bit in season 3. Sason 4’s 10 episodes are the ones that secured a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Many critics felt season 4 brought the show back to its roots .

The show stars Dominic West, Ruth Wilson, Maura Tierney, and Joshua Jackson. It's about an affair breaks up two different marriages. Emotional consequences are explored over a number of years as the show takes place. The show has won 3 Golden Globes and a Satellite Award for its drama genre and acting.

Sarah Treem, the creator of the show, plans for the 5th season to be the last season.

2 0%: The Kennedys: After Camelot

Name alone couldn’t make the mini-series The Kennedys: After Camelot popular on Reelz. After Camelot is a follow-up to 2011’s The Kennedys.

Katie Holmes returned as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. Matthew Perry played Ted Kennedy, while Alexander Siddig (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine) played Aristotle Onassis and Kristen Hager was Joan Bennett Kennedy.

Critics compared the show to a Bravo reality program and called it a “mess lacking dramatic structure or emotional and thematic beats.” One critic suggested a drinking game to go with watching the show.

Reading the critics reviews gives the impression that After Camelot wasted good actors with bad writing and soap opera-like scenes the cast performed like robots.

1 100%: Review

Review is a Comedy Central show starring Andrew Daly that has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes. Daly plays Forrest MacNeil, who reviews his experiences in real-life.

It’s a reality show-style mockumentary that follows MacNeil as he reviews situations to determine if they are good or bad experiences.

MacNeil engaged in life experiences like stealing, eating 15 pancakes, having a best friend, getting rich quick, and rowing a boat. His ratings are based on 5 stars and many of his ratings are 1 and 2 stars. Some fun experiences, like going in to space, have gotten 5 stars.

Review was inspired by the Australian TV show Review with Myles Barlow. The U.S. version lasted 3 seasons with 22 episodes.
