Bohemian Rhapsody is Getting a New Trailer Soon

The second trailer for the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody will release soon. The film is expected to arrive this November, detailing the career of the prolific lead singer of Queen. Bohemian Rhapsody's first trailer released in May and did a great job at teasing the new film, but it was also met with a bit of outcry since it did nothing to address Freddie’s sexuality.

Queen is one of the most iconic rock bands of all-time and, as such, a movie about their eccentric vocalist has been long gestating. For a while, actor Sacha Baron Cohen, whose facial features highly resemble Mercury’s, was attached to star. The film spent a great deal of time in development hell, losing and gaining a number of directors before Cohen dropped out of the project due to disagreements between himself and surviving Queen members, specifically on how the film should address Freddie’s lifestyle. Years later, the project was revived with Bryan Singer directing and Rami Malek starring as Mercury.

According to the film’s official Twitter account, a second trailer is on the way. A new image of Malek as Freddie Mercury was also revealed with the announcement. Take a look:

While the first trailer did not outright address Mercury’s sexuality, his flamboyant songwriting and performance abilities were at the forefront, detailing a hilarious scene featuring the band recording the film’s title song. This seems to indicate that perhaps the film will indeed focus mostly on Freddie’s career. However, this may come as a disappointment to fans who wanted to see a faithful depiction of the icon, especially given his impact on public perception on homosexuality as well as how his AIDS-related death brought public awareness to the issue. Perhaps, the second trailer will change that and show audiences the side to Mercury that was just as important as his musical talent.

It is refreshing to see this long-developing project finally come to fruition, but the depiction of Mercury’s lifestyle is not the only cause for concern associated with the film. Director Bryan Singer was fired from the film last December, following his absence from set due to “a personal health matter.” This occurred around the same time that Singer was accused of sexual assault, leading many to speculate that the two events were connected. Despite this, Singer will still be credited as director for Bohemian Rhapsody, despite Dexter Fletcher helming the last month of principal photography. Hopefully, all the behind-the-scenes drama surrounding the film will not prevent it from doing justice to the late Freddie Mercury.
