Catwoman Fights Black Canary For Reality As We Know It

Catwoman Fights Black Canary For Reality As We Know It

Warning: SPOILERS for Catwoman/Tweety & Sylvester Special #1

Black Canary of the Birds of Prey is facing off against Catwoman in a battle that will determine the fate of "reality as they know it!" Specifically, whether all the birds or all the cats in the universe will die - along with any superheroes or supervillains who utilize a bird or cat theme in their code name. One wouldn't expect a Looney Tunes comic book to contain such a cataclysmic cosmic event, much less see Dinah Lance and Selina Kyle acting as the appointed champions of Tweety and Sylvester, and yet it is so!

This unlikely occurrence begins with a cross-reality witches convention, where an argument breaks out among several of the attendees as to what animal is more appropriate to act as a witch's familiar: birds (specifically owls, ravens and crows) or cats. Eventually the witches, whose ranks include The Hectate from Neil Gaiman's The Sandman, Klarion The Witch Boy and Witch Hazel (the green-skinned witch who continually bothered Bugs Bunny), agree to settle the matter with a contest of champions.

Tweety and Sylvester are transported from Witch Hazel's world into the universe of DC Comics, where Sylvester has until dawn to eat Tweety and determine the fate of all birds or all cats throughout all of reality.

This leads to both Tweety and Sylvester recruiting back-up, as Catwoman saves Sylvester from losing one of his nine lives as he falls out of the portal from Looney Tunes Land, and Tweety flies to the Gotham City club where Black Canary is performing that evening. Despite being confronted by talking animals, neither woman is willing to take this challenge seriously until they are given a little magical prodding by the witches. Then the battle begins in earnest.

Unsurprisingly, Catwoman is quick to make a break for it, knowing that she's far out-classed in a straight up fight with a master martial artist like Black Canary. This leads to both champions calling in back-up, through Oracle and Amanda Waller respectively, as Catman and Hawkman join the fray. Soon Gotham City is filled with the likes of Lady Blackhawk and Robin brawling with Cheetah and Streaky The Super-Cat!

Doubtlessly this story will see many an amateur continuity cop giving themselves headaches trying to justify Looney Tunes interacting with the likes of Catwoman and the Birds of Prey. They will also likely have a field day pointing out everything that is impossible within this story, including the appearances of several characters from the DC Comics Animated Universe who don't exist in the reality of Rebirth. Most audiences, more sensibly, will just enjoy the battle, in all of its over-the-top absurdity.
