Friday the 13th: Creighton Duke Spinoff May Actually Happen

Friday The 13th character Creighton Duke might be getting a spinoff movie of his own. Duke made his debut in Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday, played by actor Steven Williams, as a bounty hunter with intimate knowledge of Jason Voorhees, and someone who seeks to destroy the undead serial killer once and for all. The Final Friday remains a divisive entry in the franchise since it added new elements to the mythology, like Jason being a parasite that can jump from body to body, while classic Jason barely features in the story.

That said, Jason Goes To Hell has built up a fanbase in recent years for deviating far from the standard sequel formula and for featuring over the top gore. Writer/director Adam Marcus has since revealed that he intended Jason to be a deadite from The Evil Dead series as a way to explain his immortal nature, which is why the dagger and Necronomicon from that franchise appear in the movie. Since New Line didn't own the rights to the Evil Dead series, it was planted as an easter egg in this movie instead.

Marcus also recently revealed Creighton Duke's backstory with Jason, which is kept a mystery in Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday itself. It turns out Duke took his girlfriend to Camp Crystal Lake when he was young and witnessed Jason killing her. From then on, he dedicated himself to taking Jason down. Now Adam Marcus wants to revisit Duke, and he revealed to the Cinema Toast Crunchcast (via io9) that he's planning a spinoff with the character.

"I have a movie… you’re the first ones I’ve talked about this to… that is a completely Creighton Duke-inspired movie. We’re doing that next year. I can tell you that I’m talking with Steven Williams about this. I’m dead serious about this movie. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for years. For me, that was the character that I gave a crap about. That’s the guy that I adore. And, I’m tellin' ya, I have something up my sleeve that’s gonna knock people out."

Presumably, if this movie does go ahead, there won't be any overt references to the Friday The 13th movies or to Jason. There's also the question of how Duke is still alive, considering he's killed by Jason during the finale of The Final Friday? Those small details aside, Duke was a fun character to see on-screen and he was played to perfection by Williams. Marcus seems pretty confident the film is going ahead, so seeing Duke going after another supernatural foe could make for an entertaining spinoff.

The Friday The 13th movie series is on indefinite hold right now due to a lawsuit over who owns the rights, which has also affected the popular video game. The game can't add any new content while the lawsuit is ongoing, meaning the developers have announced there will be no more updates added moving forward. It's been nearly a decade since the last Friday The 13th movie was released, so for the foreseeable future, a possible Creighton Duke spinoff may just be the only thing fans have to look forward to.
