A new fan trailer for Game of Thrones season 8 lets fans imagine the Winter War. Season 7 of the hit HBO show saw the Night King win a major victory when he took down one of Daenerys Targaryen’s dragons and reclaimed it as a wight, using it to break down The Wall to the North. The very last shot of the season showed the Night King’s enormous army marching their way into Westeros, bringing the Winter War along with them.

In addition to the Night King’s major victory, season 7 of Game of Thrones left off with Jon Snow finally conceding to bend the knee to Daenerys Targaryen, who is still angling to take the Iron Throne from Queen Cersei Lannister. The two also began a romantic relationship. Arya, Bran, and Sansa Stark all reunited at Winterfell and succeeded in murdering Littlefinger. Meanwhile, in King’s Landing, Cersei tightened her grip on the Iron Throne and partnered with Euron Greyjoy, which caused Jamie Lannister to abandon his twin sister and leave King’s Landing, presumably to join Brienne of Tarth in the North. Perhaps most importantly of all, Jon Snow was confirmed for being Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark’s child and the true heir to the Iron Throne.

A fan trailer (above) from the Youtube channel Stryder HD shows what might happen in season 8. Set to Ramin Djawadi’s chilling theme “Light of the Seven," the fan-made trailer cuts together footage and various voice-overs from season 7, including key moments like the infamous “loot train attack” where Daenerys destroyed Jamie Lannister’s forces and Viserion’s transformation into a wight dragon. The trailer’s editing helps spark fellow fans’ imaginations and builds excitement for the ultimate, inevitable face-off between Daenerys, Jon, and others against the formidable Night King.

Game of Thrones season 8 has already wrapped production, with Maisie Williams being the last person to finish her scenes, which itself sparked speculation that she might be the last person to survive the game. Whether or not that ends up being case remains to be seen, but there's certainly a lot for fans to look forward to. The upcoming final season will truly be a culmination of everything the series has been building toward since its debut in 2011 - and the fact that there will only be six episodes heightens the notion that each episode will be just as important as the next. Unfortunately, fans have to wait a little while longer before they can see the series' conclusion.

As per usual, HBO has been essentially mute about season 8, only recently confirming that it will air during the first half of 2019. Fans of the epic fantasy series are essentially in the dark about what to expect from the show’s big finale. For now, those anxious for the premiere of season 8 can keep the above fan trailer on repeat and imagine the arrival of the Night King and his Winter War.
