Infinity War VFX Clip Breaks Down A Major Character's Death

A new VFX clip has given a behind-the-scenes glimpse at the death of Tom Holland's Spider-Man in Avengers: Infinity War. The cliffhanger ending of Avengers: Infinity War saw Thanos snap his fingers, and succeed in his insane mission to erase half the life in the universe.

Countless Marvel heroes crumbled to dust before the horrified eyes of viewers - and Tom Holland's Spider-Man took the longest to die. Directors Joe and Anthony Russo have confirmed that Peter Parker's spider-sense warned him of his imminent death, and he desperately tried to fight off the effects of the "snap."

These haunting death scenes were created by the visual effects company Weta Digital. Now, a VFX clip has shown just how they did this. An initial scene was filmed with Tom Holland in a motion capture suit alongside Robert Downey Jr. This was blended with another take of the scene, in which Downey acted against an empty set. Holland was placed back in that scene digitally, and Weta then used CGI to dissolve his body. The final scene was deeply emotional, not least because of Tom Holland's improvised performance.

Matt Aiken, lead VFX supervisor for Weta, admitted the whole effects team found themselves moved by Spidey's death scene. Speaking exclusively to Screen Rant, he revealed that they couldn't watch the scene without being "all choked up." Where the other death scenes were viewed from a distance, with their bodies dissolving into dust, this one involved a tight focus on Peter Parker's face. The VFX here had to be absolutely seamless - and Weta certainly pulled it off. Watching the sequence on the big screen, it's impossible to recognize the transition between actual performance and CGI.

As tragic as this scene may be, though, the reality is that nobody's really expecting Spider-Man's death to last. The cliffhanger ending of Avengers: Infinity War killed off characters who are certain to appear in sequels - heroes like Black Panther, Doctor Strange, and of course Spider-Man. In July, Marvel and Sony will begin filming the Spider-Man: Homecoming sequel. Sony's Amy Pascal has already revealed that this film will be set mere minutes after the events of Avengers 4. Kevin Feige has already confirmed that the film's purpose in the grand scheme of the MCU is to introduce viewers to what he calls "the next incarnation of the MCU." So, it's clear Spider-Man will be coming back somehow - and, if one of Thanos's victims will be brought back from the dead, then it seems likely they all will be.

But the temporary nature of Peter's death in Avengers: Infinity War doesn't mean it lacks an emotional impact. The reality is that this is one of the most painful scenes to watch in the entire MCU to date, not least because it's a heartbreaking continuation of the mentor relationship Tony Stark developed with Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
