Into The Spider-Verse Reportedly Adds Nicolas Cage As Spider-Man Noir

Sony’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse has reportedly added Nicolas Cage to its growing roster of voice actors, in the role of Spider-Man Noir. The animated film, which is scheduled to release later this year, is directed by Bob Persichetti, Peter Ramsey and Rodney Rothman. It will serve as the theatrical debut of Miles Morales, an alternate version of Spider-Man. Notably, the movie is not part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, despite Spider-Man's current live-action MCU stint.

In the film, Miles is learning how to balance his double life as a superhero and high school student when he runs into an adult Peter Parker. Peter, recognizing that Miles shares his powers, takes the boy under his wing and reluctantly decides to teach him how to be Spider-Man. As one might imagine, the movie will introduce the Spider-Verse, where more than one Spider-Man exists. The trailer already confirmed that Spider-Gwen will play a role in the film as well.

As mentioned above, Cage looks set to voice Spider-Man Noir in Spider-Verse, according to a report by Discussing Film. Cage is of course a noted fan of comic books and has starred in many comic book adaptations already.  He's played Marvel’s Ghost Rider in both the 2007 film of the same name and its 2011 sequel, Big Daddy in Kick-Ass, and will be voicing Superman in Teen Titans Go! to the Movies, set to be released later this month. Other voice actors confirmed for the film so far include Pitch Perfect star Hailee Steinfeld as Spider-Gwen, New Girl’s Jake Johnson as Peter Parker, and actor/rapper Shamiek Moore as Miles Morales.

Spider-Man Noir shares the secret identity of Peter Parker. However, his world is set in the 1933 Great Depression, which is part of the Marvel Noir universe. This incarnation of Spider-Man received his powers after being bitten by a spider released from a mysterious statue. He made an appearance in the 2012 animated series Ultimate Spider-Man during the Spider-Verse arc. Miles also made an appearance in the same series, and in the 2017 Spider-Man cartoon. Both aired on Disney XD. Thus, it makes sense to include him in the movie. Those who've viewed those series will recognize him, and Noir is just different enough from Spider-Man's other incarnations to really stand out within the Spider-Verse landscape. However, since the film intends to bring together as many Spider-Man variants as it possibly can, Noir might not have a large role in the plot.

As far as casting goes, Nicolas Cage is an interesting choice. While Spider-Man Noir is a more serious character, neither the film or Cage seem to be particularly serious. It's possible he approached the filmmakers with the idea, and even suggested which character he could play. Like most of the cast so far, Cage isn't a trained voice actor. The directors could be going for name recognition to fill the roles, like many current animated productions, or they could be filling the roles with people knowledgable and passionate about the Spider-Verse. The former seems likely, considering the movie faces stiff competition from the MCU, and there was no way for anyone to predict the success of Into the Spider-Verse's first trailer, which garnered 44 million views in three days.
