Jurassic World 2 Roars Past $700 Million at the Worldwide Box Office

Thanks to its domestic opening of $150 million, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has already powered its way past the $700 million mark at the global box office. Once again starring Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, Fallen Kingdom is the follow-up to 2015 mega-blockbuster Jurassic World, the fourth film in the Jurassic Park movie saga that stormed its way to $1.671 billion at the worldwide box office.

Directed by Colin Trevorrow, Jurassic World held fourth place on the all-time list of highest grossing movies globally until Avengers: Infinity War bumped the movie to fifth place in the spring. Now, Fallen Kingdom has the daunting task ahead of living up the financial success of its predecessor, and while Fallen Kingdom had a weaker domestic opening than the first Jurassic World in 2015, the film is still off to a remarkable start.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has now grossed an estimated $711 million worldwide, of which approximately 53 percent were from 3D showings (about $380 million). Playing in its third weekend overseas, Fallen Kingdom took in $561.5 million in foreign territories and an estimated $150 million domestically. Bolstering the overseas box office was a massive $202.6 million box office tally in China alone.

While Fallen Kingdom performed very well overseas, domestically, the $150 million take falls far short of Jurassic World's opening business stateside, which was $208.8 million in 2015. On the positive side, the film, directed by J.A. Bayona and co-written by Trevorrow, topped domestic estimates heading into the weekend, where the film was pegged to earn in the neighborhood of $129 million in its opening frame.

Fallen Kingdom no doubt has its work cut out in its bid to equal the final domestic ($652.2 million) and overseas ($1.019 million) hauls of Jurassic World, but luckily, the film has at least one more weekend domestically without any blockbuster competition. On July 6, however, Fallen Kingdom will be in a battle for box office dollars when Ant-Man and The Wasp opens domestically. The Jurassic World sequel will get a bit more breathing room overseas, though, because the Ant-Man sequel is not opening in England and some other foreign territories until August, a delay thanks a month of World Cup soccer play.

While the prospects for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom's long range box office tally don't appear to be as bright as its predecessor, Universal Pictures certainly has a lot to be thankful for. Fallen Kingdom marks Universal second biggest opener, domestically, behind the first Jurassic World film; and the sequel's tepid Rotten Tomatoes "rotten" rating of 50 percent hasn't deterred audiences from the seeing the film. On the flip side, however, a fairly complimentary "fresh" 71 percent rating of Jurassic World could have factored in to the film's opening domestic gross in 2015.
