Marvel's Runaways Season 2 Is Now Filming

It would appear that cameras have started rolling on season 2 of Marvel’s Runaways. Although it was initially reported that filming would begin in April, there has been no confirmation of this from Hulu or the showrunners.

We’ve all felt that our parents were evil at some point, right? Well, Runaways takes that concept quite literally. The show follows a group of teens who team up to stop their parents from hatching rather nefarious plans. Adapted for television by Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (The OC, Gossip Girl), the series is based on the comic of the same name, which was created by Brian K. Vaughan and Adrian Alphona. The book debuted in 2003, but was canceled after a mere 18 issues. However, high numbers in digest sales prompted Marvel to resurrect Runaways less than a year after its cancelation and the characters have continued to endure ever since. The Hulu series has garnered positive reviews but is taking its time, with the kids finally running away in the first season finale.

Virginia Gardner, who portrays Karolina Dean, posted an Instagram story of her and her costars throwing loaves of bread at each other. The actors appear to be on a soundstage, with several of their chairs visible, which would imply that filming has officially begun. Although the show was renewed for a second season back in January, this is the first proof of production that we have seen.

The Hulu series has been a slow burn thus far, but there are plenty of exciting places that the story could go when Runaways returns. There are new characters that could be added, such as Victor Mancha, and if the show chooses to follow the book, one member of the group is a mole. However, Runaways quickly established itself as being a completely different entity from the comics, using the source material as little more than a basic blueprint - although thankfully, the writers chose to include Gert’s pet dinosaur, Old Lace.

Schwartz and Savage have proven themselves quite adept at creating shows about teens that resonate with viewers of all ages. In the comics, the kids’ parents were straightforward villains, but the show takes a far more nuanced approach. This is why the titular runaways take so long to actually leave home, as opposed to the comic, where everything happens at a much quicker pace. More than likely, Runaways will continue to only loosely base itself on the book and that’s okay. The comic was undeniably one of Marvel’s best. Runaways was smart, funny and unlike any other superhero story. However, television is a completely different animal and the show has made some very smart changes, while still managing to keep the comic’s essence intact.

There is so much rich material to mine from the comics, but there are new avenues to explore as well. Cloak and Dagger showrunner, Joe Pokaski, would even like to see a crossover between the two shows. Very little has been revealed about what’s in store for the kids in season 2 and with Runaways diverging so much from the comics, it’s anybody’s guess what will happen next. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long to find out.
