Netflix Is Open To More Marvel Spinoff TV Shows

Speaking at the TCA Summer Tour, Netflix Vice-President Cindy Holland revealed that there are ongoing discussions with Marvel about whether to launch further spinoff shows.

Marvel's initial deal with the streaming giant saw Netflix sign up for five shows; Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and The Defenders. But things changed in 2016, when Jon Bernthal's portrayal of the Punisher in Daredevil season 2 proved to be a tremendous success. Marvel and Netflix agreed to a spinoff series starring Bernthal as the murderous vigilante.

Ever since then, viewers have wondered whether or not there would be any more Marvel Netflix shows. Today, speaking at the TCA Summer Tour, Netflix vice-president Cindy Holland has implied that it's possible. According to Variety editor Debra Birnbaum, Holland confirmed that there is "always an ongoing discussion as to whether we will spin off additional characters."

It's important to put this quote in context. In 2019, Disney - Marvel's parent company - intends to launch a streaming service that will directly compete with Netflix. As a result, next year Disney will pull almost all their content from Netflix, including Marvel and Star Wars movies. The Marvel Netflix slate should be safe, though, because these shows were actually produced by Netflix. Still, fans have been speculating since as to whether there could ever be a new Marvel Netflix series. Last year, THR reported that Disney had banned Marvel from selling to outside companies, presumably in order to ensure Marvel wasn't creating a lot of new content for rivals like Netflix. Although Marvel denied that, it's worth noting that no Marvel TV shows have been sold to non-Disney networks since. Thus, it's unlikely Marvel will pitch a Ghost Rider or Blade series to Netflix anytime soon.

That said, Holland's comment doesn't appear to refer to this kind of brand-new content; rather, it seems to be specific to "spin offs" like The Punisher. That would make sense; given that all of Marvel TV's live-action shows ostensibly take place in the same shared cinematic universe, any character who appears in a Marvel Netflix series likely won't be adapted in a different way for a show on Disney's streaming service. Holland's comment is sure to make viewers sit up and take note. There's real interest in seeing the Marvel Netflix slate change shape, with many viewers pushing for a Daughters of the Dragon series starring Misty Knight and Colleen Wing. That idea suddenly looks a lot more feasible to actually happen.
