Peyton Reed Has No Idea If Ant-Man 3 Is Going To Happen

by Samantha Callender – on Jul 03, 2018 in Movie News

Ant-Man and the Wasp director Peyton Reed says he doesn’t know if there will be an Ant-Man 3. With Ant-Man 2 releasing later this week, fans are already wondering what the future holds for the franchise. According to Reed, Marvel Studios has given no indication about what’s next for Ant-Man/Scott Lang.

Scott was introduced to the MCU back in 2015. A former criminal who decides to go for one last job, finds himself sucked into the world of superheroes. Always hoping to be a good father and role model to his daughter Cassie, Scott agrees to become Ant-Man to keep himself out of jail as much as to save the world from the villain Yellow Jacket. Three years later, Scott teams up with Hope van Dyne (the Wasp) for another standalone adventure while still struggling with the consequences of his criminal acts in Captain America: Civil War.

In an interview with THR, Reed discussed his experiences working with Marvel Studios to create both Ant-Man films, but he couldn’t give a definitive answer about any plans for an Ant-Man 3. Most of the studio’s attention is focused on preparing for Avengers 4, the closing chapter of the MCU’s Phase 3. Yet, fans shouldn’t lose hope. Reed pointed out that “We didn’t have any idea there would be a second Ant-Man until maybe a month or so after the first one came out.” The studio could be waiting to see how Ant-Man and the Wasp fairs in theaters before making any announcement regarding a third film. With a Certified Fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and expectations for Ant-Man and the Wasp to make more than the first film, chances are good that Marvel Studios will want to continue the franchise.

With no official statement, fans are left wondering if Scott and Hope will play a role in Phase 4 or if they will make their final goodbyes in Avengers 4. Not giving Ant-Man a full trilogy would be an odd choice, considering how most of the other MCU heroes have or will get three films to complete their story arc (the one exception being The Incredible Hulk). Even Captain Marvel, who will not hit theaters until 2019, is expected to remain long after the events of Avengers 4. Should Marvel Studios give Ant-Man 3 the green light, Reed is ready to continue his role as director and already has a plan in mind, stating “There is a story to tell there. Definitely. There is a story we’ve talked about potentially.” He isn't the only one who wants Ant-Man to return at some later date. Evangeline Lilly, who plays the Wasp, has expressed interest in playing the character in another film.

Fans have been clamoring for the return of Ant-Man ever since learning of his absence in Infinity War. His next installment promises to be a good time, with early reviews promising another fun and a more lighthearted addition to the MCU. While there is no confirmation for Ant-Man 3, audiences can remain hopeful of once again being reunited with Scott sometime in the future.
