Get ready to head back to Mega-City One as Rebellion Developments teases an update on that rumored Judge Dredd video game. Based on the popular 2000 AD character, a Judge Dredd game could neatly coincide with the upcoming Mega-City One TV series.
The stoic lawman is largely remembered for 1995's Judge Dredd with Sylvester Stallone behind the visor and the 2012 adaptation of Dredd that starred Karl Urban. As the longest-running character of the 2000 AD comics, Judge Dredd has been doing the rounds since 1977 and appeared in everything from novels to audio series and video games. With the world of 2000 AD preparing to expand its properties, a Judge Dredd game could be closer than first thought.

In an interview with The Express, Rebellion founder Jason Kingsley teased when Dredd could become judge, jury, and executioner again in video game form:
"We’ve had a lot of people interested in working with us, and their visions for our intellectual properties, which is really exciting. I would reckon towards the end of this year/beginning of next, we’ll start to see the fruits of that and start to announce things that we’re working on and show people what’s going on. Fingers crossed we’ll get some more 2000 AD games soon."
When pushed on what specific 2000 AD properties Rebellion is working on, Kingsley hinted that the company is focussing its efforts on Judge Dredd:
"Well Judge Dredd is obviously one of our major comic book characters so I would be surprised if there wasn’t going to be some activity around Judge Dredd, but we’re not actually announcing anything."
Dredd last made his way onto consoles in 2003 with Judge Dredd: Dredd vs. Death and a game that has an even worse reputation than the 1995 movie. Rebellion then brought the character to mobile in 2012 with Judge Dredd Vs. Zombies but has been quiet ever since. Although there are other popular 2000 AD properties like Halo Jones, Strontium Dog, and Rogue Trooper, Judge Dredd is a logical place to start.
Later this year, gaming fans will see Insomniac reinvent the sometimes lackluster world of Spider-Man games with its open-world PS4 exclusive. With Judge Dredd having an equally expansive world, somewhere like Mega-City One is just crying out for a similar treatment. Urban has expressed his interest in returning to the role of Dredd ever since Pete Travis' movie left theaters. One way to ensure a Dredd game does well is to get Urban on board to voice the lead character all over again.
Rebellion has worked on 2000 AD games in the past but doesn't have the best track record for chart-topping games. After August's release of Strange Brigade, Rebellion could then put all its effort into Dredd or whatever it is working on. The company clearly has plans on where it wants to go next, and if the rest of the Dredd world is getting a new lease of life, why would the video games be any different?
