Sam Neill & Laura Dern Appearing In Jurassic World 3 Seems More Likely Now

It seems more likely now that Sam Neill and Laura Dern will make an appearance in Jurassic World 3. Jurassic World introduced audiences to a slew of new characters and also brought back BD Wong, who reprised his role in the 2015 film as well as Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. Jeff Goldblum returned to the franchise with the recent film as well, leaving fans wondering if Sam Neill's Dr. Alan Grant and Laura Dern's Dr. Ellie Sattler will appear in the third installment.

Neill, Dern, and Goldblum appeared together in the original 1993 film Jurassic Park. But in the franchise's subsequent and less successful sequels, the trio was not reunited. Goldblum led the charge in the 1997 sequel The Lost World: Jurassic Park, while Neill appeared in the final film of the original trilogy, Jurassic Park III, with Dern's role essentially becoming a cameo. With Goldblum's return to Dr. Malcolm in Fallen Kingdom, Neill and Dern's return to the franchise has been on fans, and Colin Trevorrow's, minds.

In an interview with MTV, Trevorrow would love to bring back Dern and Neill to the franchise in their respective roles. While Trevorrow turned the directing reins over to J.A. Bayona this time around, he did remain a writer and executive producer. Jurassic World 3 will have Trevorrow back in the director's chair and writing the screenplay with Emily Charmichael. When asked he felt a sort of obligation to meet expectations in Jurassic World 3, regarding legacy characters and some fans feeling cheated if characters like Alan Grant or Ellie Sattler didn't appear, he replied, "I totally agree with that. I would feel robbed too, yeah."

When talking about the recent addition, Fallen Kingdom, Trevorrow discussed whether he was mentioning characters from the original films as a sort of nod to it's lasting impact. His response explained the inclusion of Dr. Ian Malcolm, saying:

"We felt like this was Malcolm's return. This was his... let him have his moment. I feel that way about everyone, especially Laura [Dern], in that she never got to have her own movie. That identified as being something that's important. I feel like this moment with Goldblum, because he had this very clear set of ethical questions that he was able to pose for everyone, we just wanted to put the spotlight on him."

Jurassic World 3 is still three years away from hitting theaters, but Trevorrow already has his mind on bringing back more original characters. There's no confirmation yet as to whether or not Neill and Dern would return to the franchise. Dern has already had great success in the last year with roles in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Twin Peaks, and her Emmy nominated performance in HBO's Big Little Lies.

Neill and Dern's return could bring the films full circle for fans. Their inclusion would possibly draw in devotee's of the original films, as well. Trevorrow has already begun working on the third Jurassic World film, which means he may have in mind how to work in the original characters. The recent Jurassic World feature, which is nearing a billion dollars at the worldwide box office, is underperforming compared to the last movie, and critical acclaim has been less than enthusiastic. So perhaps bringing back Neill and Dern in the third film could bolster audience interest, and, subsequently, box office draw.
