The Nun Jump Scare Trailer Annoys YouTube Users

A jump scare trailer for upcoming Warner Bros. horror film The Nun - the latest spinoff of The Conjuring - is both frightening and annoying Youtube users. One of the realities of the internet is that just about any content users get to access for free is supported by some of type of advertising revenue. There are exceptions, but not many. While some choose to circumvent these ads via adblocking software, that of course introduces the moral dilemma of possibly denying payment for their work to one's favorite content creators.

That said, there are certain types of loud, flashy, or intrusive advertisements that most can agree sometimes warrant silencing. Most ads are pretty harmless, but nobody likes quietly reading an article, or sitting back to watch a video, only to be suddenly bombarded with unexpected noise or shocking images. It's a jolting effect, and it's exactly that effect that's currently being achieved by WB's current Youtube ad for The Nun.

According to Polygon, Youtubers are currently being menaced by a short trailer for The Nun that gives users only a scant few seconds to turn the volume down on their computer before unleashing brief horrifying imagery and sound effects from the film, including a blood-curdling scream. It's a short ad, but it's enough to catch many off guard, and turn what was a pleasant Youtube viewing session into something both annoying and uncomfortable. After all, not everyone likes horror movies, or enjoys being scared.

The ad in question is clearly becoming well-known, as a Tweet warning Youtubers about it has now been retweeted over 80,000 times. "WARNING! If you see an ad on youtube with the volume sign being turned down and nothing else, it’s a jump scare for the new Nun movie coming out. I advise you look away and/or turn down the volume if you have anxiety or just straight up hate jump scares," says the tweet. Another ad featuring a tarantula crawling out of a girl's mouth has also drawn some ire on Reddit, but that one appears to be promotion for music, not a movie.

While the imagery found in The Nun's offending ad is quite tame by horror movie standards, it's not hard to see why it's bothering people. For one, non-fans may not be used to seeing such material, and secondly, even those who enjoy horror don't necessarily want to be scared at any random moment of their day. There's a difference between purposefully choosing to go see a horror film - or tune into an episode of a scary TV show - and being forced to endure a jump scare before an adorable cat video. Thankfully, Google does offer a solution to the Nun issue. Users can visit this address while logged into their Google/Youtube account to personalize what type of ads they receive, and horror films is a category that can be disabled.
