Unreleased 1994 Game From Battlefield's DICE Comes Out in 2019

Battlefield developer DICE is having an unreleased project brought back to life, with the title Hardcore finally seeing release after being abandoned in 1994. Since then, the company has become one of the biggest names in gaming, with its Battlefield franchise acting as one of the biggest FPS series around.

Right now, DICE is busy with things like the very impressive Battlefield V closed alpha, but that wasn't always the case. Back in 1994, the studio was working on an action platformer called Hardcore, which was due for release across the Sega Genesis, Sega CD, and Amiga, but the game would be put on hold when it was tantalizingly close to being launched.

However, finally the game is going to see release. The title, which is going to be published by Strictly Limited Games, has been resurrected a full 24 years after its initial development, and will now get launched in 2019 for the PS4 and PS Vita consoles. The game's official reveal trailer can be seen below, for those who want a glimpse at its Metroidvania-style gameplay in action.

It will perhaps offer a little bit of closure for DICE, with some of the senior team still at the studio having worked on the title. "I know the care, love, sweat and hard work that went into creating Hardcore in the first place by all involved parties," said Fredrik Liljegren, DICE founder, continuing to state that "it is fantastic that this product finally gets to see the light of day and for people to be able to play it finally."

Exactly why the game was shelved is something of a head-scratcher, but a story that became all-too-familiar around the same time in the mid-1990s. The game was set to be published by Psygnosis, but the game was then put on hold by the company, even though previews had already been sent out to gaming magazines. The reason given to DICE at the time was that the publisher wanted to instead focus on the new generation of gaming consoles, so a release for older systems like the Genesis was no longer seen as a priority. A similar reason was given for the unreleased Star Fox sequel being shelved, so Hardcore was in good company.

It's not the only time that a promising video game was cancelled before release, and it will be interesting to see how Hardcore fares when it launches next year. The title will apparently remain faithful to its original build, albeit with some vertical scrolling levels built specifically for the Sega CD release included, and with tough 2D action platformers making a comeback it could find a lot of love - unfortunately, a couple of decades later than originally planned.
