Why Spider-Man Homecoming 2 Is Called Far From Home

Why Spider-Man Homecoming 2 Is Called Far From Home

Thanks to Peter Parker actor Tom Holland, we now know that the sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming will be titled Spider-Man: Far From Home - but what (if anything) does that tell us about the movie's plot? At the very least, it fits with what we've previously heard about the movie being filmed in various European cities - including London, Venice, and Prague - and also with rumors about the movie's plot involving a school field trip or exchange program.

Last time we saw Spider-Man he was very far away from home indeed. In Avengers: Infinity War, Peter stows away on Thanos' ship and ends up on the purple giant's home planet, Titan - now a deserted wasteland. There, alongside Doctor Strange, Iron Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy, Spider-Man battled with Thanos and came close to removing the Infinity Gauntlet. However, they ultimately failed (thanks to Star-Lord's little outburst), allowing Thanos to escape, snap his fingers with the completed Infinity Gauntlet, and wipe out half of all life in the universe - Spider-Man included.

Despite the continued insistence of Marvel higher-ups that the deaths in Infinity War are totally real, it's difficult to mourn Peter when we know that Spider-Man: Far From Home will be in theaters just a couple of months after Avengers 4. While "Far From Home" might be interpreted to mean that Spidey will be still be stuck somewhere out in space when his second solo movie begins, it's very unlikely that Far From Home will be a direct sequel (storyline-wise) to Infinity War. Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige has said that "the two Avengers films that precede [Far From Home] will greatly inform, probably even more so, the next movie," but only in the same way that Spider-Man: Homecoming was informed by Captain America: Civil War.

Spider-Man: Homecoming's director Jon Watts returned to direct the sequel, which is expected to begin filming this summer and wrap in December. Feige said that "Spidey, of course, will spend some time in New York, but he’ll spend some time in other parts of the globe," while producer Amy Pascal has said that Spider-Man: Far From Home picks up "just a few minutes" after the end of Avengers 4.

Although "Far From Home" is almost certainly referencing Peter Parker's adventures in Europe, it seems likely that it's also an oblique reference to the fact that Peter has travelled to an alien planet. Just as he found the mundanity of teenage life frustrating after travelling to Germany and fighting alongside superheroes in Civil War, Spider-Man will now have to try and return to his normal life after going to an alien planet and fighting a giant space-god with a massive glove. It might be hard to take homework seriously after that.
