A reboot of the cult-classic horror-action series Buffy the Vampire Slayer was announced in July, with Monica Owusu-Breen (Midnight,Texas) set to serve as executive producer and showrunner for the new series. However, according to Fox Television Chairman and CEO Gary Newman, the reboot is still in the early stages.

“There’s actually no script to see,” said Newman at the Television Critics Association press tour. “We’ve sat down with creators and had conversations with them about it. It’s a very exciting prospect. It’s fairly early. We haven’t pitched it to any possible licensees yet, all of that is still to come. We’re thrilled that Joss has engaged Monica, who he worked with on one of his other series. She’s the person who is day to day on it. She has a great take on the show.”
Buffy the Vampire Slayer garnered a massive cult following that is still felt to this day. Running for five seasons on the WB before moving to UPN for the final two seasons, the series was created by Joss Whedon (The Avengers, Firefly, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.) and based on the film by the same named, which Whedon penned.

The series launched a spin-off show focused on the character Angel (David Boreanz), which ran for four seasons on the WB. A comic series based in the Buffy universe began publication at Dark Horse Comics in 1998, well before the show’s series finale. Whedon will return to serve as executive producer for the reboot. The premiere date for the reboot has not yet been announced.
