It's Official: Uncharted Creator Amy Hennig Has Left EA, Star Wars Game Canned

Uncharted creator Amy Hennig has officially parted ways with EA, leaving her remnant untitled Star Wars game for the publisher unfinished and shelved. The video game writer and director is a celebrated creator in the games industry, and her Uncharted series for Naughty Dog became one of the best-selling and most critically-acclaimed franchises on the Sony PlayStation family of consoles.

Hennig has worked in the industry since the 80s, and was a key player in the writing and development of the Legacy of Kain series for Canadian development studio Silicon Knights, helming its classic sequel Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Still, most gamers know her best as the writer and director of the Uncharted games, which have become crown jewels of the modern third-person action-adventure genre, paving the way for Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us series.

During a gaming conference in Barcelona, as reported by Eurogamer, Hennig confirmed that she had departed from EA back in January, and her Star Wars game is “on the shelf now.” The untitled open-world game was originally on the docket of EA’s Visceral Games - where Hennig served as Senior Creative Director - but the studio was shuttered back in October. Considering that Hennig was still technically associated with EA at the time of Visceral’s closure, there remained attention and faint hope that the Star Wars game might eventually see the light of day through another EA division, but today’s news essentially quashes such expectations.

Visceral Games made a name for themselves with the Dead Space series, and had been associated with EA for almost two decades. Precious little information emerged about their Star Wars project during development, leaving it the subject of frequent fan attention and speculation. Furthermore, the franchise has seen little in the way of action-adventure titles of late, with development resources often pursuant of the multiplayer shooter series Star Wars: Battlefront, including its recent sequel.

Hennig’s association with EA since Visceral's closure has definitely been on the quiet side. She mentioned that her silence during these dealings had been “awkward because it was like, I never got the chance to announce that I’m not at EA, so I need to just pull off that band-aid at some point – but also had nothing to announce.”

While it’s hard to outright state that there is absolutely no chance of the Visceral Star Wars game seeing the light of day at this point, Hennig does not sound hopeful: “Everybody loved what we were doing and I’d love to see us resurrect that somehow, but it’s complicated.”

Regardless, Hennig remains working in the industry, and excitedly described her ongoing gaming ventures, including building her independent games studio and looking towards some potential VR projects in the near future.
