Loki TV series lands showrunner in Rick & Morty’s Michael Waldon

The Hollywood Reporter is bringing word that TV writer Michael Waldron will be the showrunner on the Loki TV series currently in development at Disney +, the Disney streaming service. The show will reportedly follow the title God of Mischief as he pops up throughout time influencing human history. Tom Hiddleston is expected to reprise his signature role for the limited series.

A veteran of Dan Harmon’s Starburns Industries, Waldron honed his craft on shows like HarmonQuest and the smash hit Rick and Morty, where he wrote scripts for the currently-in-production fourth season. This is not the first time the Marvel Universe and Rick and Morty‘s creators have intersected, as Harmon himself contributed uncredited rewrites to 2016’s Doctor Strange.

Disney is developing multiple limited series featuring characters from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Loki and Scarlet Witch being two of the shows in development. Both Tom Hiddleston and Elizabeth Olsen are expected to reprise their roles for their respective series. There are plans for other limited series that will feature other Marvel heroes who haven’t gotten their own movies.

Marvel Studios will reportedly oversee the new limited series, with each only consisting of six to eight episodes and Kevin Feige taking a hands-on role in their development.

So far very few of the Marvel TV series have featured characters from the films, despite the shared MCU landscape. Marvel TV and Marvel Studios have operated as separate entities, with shows like Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and the rest often referring to events in the films while the movies ignore the characters who originated on TV.
