NBC has officially given a script commitment to a drama based on The Last American Vampire.
Based on the Seth Grahame-Smith novel, the author is teaming with his producing partner David Katzenberg and Terry Matalas to produce the show. Matalas was previously the showrunner on 12 Monkeys, and KatzSmith Productions (a joint venture by Grahame-Smith and Katzenberg) has a pod deal with 20th Century Fox Television. As reported by Deadline, Matalas will serve as an executive producer on the project, alongside Grahame-Smith and Katzenberg.

The novel is essentially a vampiric take on Silence of the Lambs. It follows Henry Sturges, a 500-year old vampire who first appeared in Grahame-Smith’s other novel, Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter. The character was imprisoned for decades and believed to be the last of his kind before a new rash of vampire attacks forces the FBI to team him up with a young analyst named Abby to solve the mystery.
The character of Henry Sturges appeared in the film adaptation of Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter directed by Timur Bekmambetov. In it, he was played by Dominic Cooper, who currently stars in the AMC adaptation of Preacher. It is currently unknown if the producers will try to recruit Cooper back to the role.
