Rick and Morty made a surprise appearance Monday at the 70th Primetime Emmy Award ceremony.
The intergalactic animated duo presented the Emmy Award for Outstanding Reality Competition Program, ultimately won by RuPaul’s Drag Race. Both characters appeared on a screen during the presentation, and for a moment it seemed as if Morty had managed to corral Rick into acting civil. They arrived in tuxedos, and quickly went into their award show spiel. “Nobody knows reality more than us,” Morty told the audience, “because nobody’s been to more realities!”

And then, naturally, Rick hijacked the presentation and promptly went off-prompter. “You want an award for reality?” he asked. “Here’s a reality about your award.” He then pulled out a beautiful butterfly creature and claimed it was a living, breathing Emmy.

“You’re looking at it before its feet are mounted to a wooden base and its’ wrists bound to a weighted sphere that holds its body in a celebratory pose while it’s dipped into molten gold,” Rick shared with the audience. “Everyone that takes one of these home is a monster.”
Rick and Morty won its first Outstanding Animated Program Emmy earlier this month for the Season 3 episode “Pickle Rick.”
