When Season 2 of Riverdale concluded last May, Archie’s gang of high school friends watched helplessly as their fearless leader was escorted away by police in front of the entire school. Thanks to the manipulations of Hiram Lodge, Archie Andrews was now under arrest for a murder he had, of course, nothing to do with.
Although the first trailer of Season 3 of Riverdale was released during last July’s Comic-Con International in San Diego, there was actually little new footage shown. Even more confusing, Archie seemed to be out of prison already, enjoying a fun summer with his friends. However, with the release a new promo of the upcoming season chock-filled with new footage, we now have a greater idea of what will go down in the quiet little town of Riverdale when the CW series returns.

The video features plenty of footage of Archie in prison, who can clearly be seen having a rough time of it. Even more surprising, the young Andrews also appears to have gotten a Serpent tattoo while being incarcerated, likely in a bid for protection. While there is still much we don’t know about Archie’s upcoming storyline, it does appear like he may become the newest member of the South Side gang, joining a group that now includes Jughead Jones, Betty Cooper, Cheryl Blossom and Toni Topaz.

But that’s not all that is noteworthy in the promo — it also appears like the occult will be coming to the series. The first trailer of Season 3 teased the arrival of a strange, cult-like family, and this new promo features even more strange footage, such as a worshiping idol made out of dead branches that looks like something out of NBC’s Hannibal, as well as some sort of shrine complete with a circle of candles. Whatever this is, it’s likely that this will become the newest dark mystery in Riverdale, following the hunt for Jason Blossom’s murderer in Season 1 and the menace of the Black Hood serial killer in Season 2.
With such strange occult elements seeping their way into Riverdale, one can’t help but wonder if this is paving the way for the introduction of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch in the world of the series, a character who is set to star in her very own Netflix series, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.
