Ever since set photos of Anna Diop’s take on Starfire for DC Universe’s upcoming Titan series first leaked back in April, the actor has been facing harassment, not only for the character’s look but for her own race (Diop is a black woman, while Starfire is an orange alien). In fact, Diop was even forced to disable comments on her Instagram account just recently due to the continued online harassment, which prompted her co-star Minka Kelly, who plays Dawn Granger/Dove, to speak up.
“I would like to take a moment to acknowledge how proud and excited I am to be working alongside @The_AnnaDiop,” Kelly wrote in an Instagram post. “In my humble opinion, @DCUTitans, @theDCuniverse and all of their fans are lucky to have her talent, her grace and her beauty on board.”

Star Wars: The Last Jedi actor Kelly Marie Tran also faced months of online harassment, leading her to leave Instagram in June. Her co-star John Boyega, who was targeted by racists after he was cast as the Stormtrooper Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, spoke out in support of Tran and other franchise actors.
Debuting on this fall on DC Universe, Titans stars Brenton Thwaites as Dick Grayson, Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, Ryan Potter as Beast Boy, Alan Ritchson as Hawk, and Minka Kelly as Dove.
