Believe it or not, an unopened box of first edition Pokemon cards from 1999 have sold for a whopping $56,000, putting a new, expensive spin on the classic phrase, “gotta catch ’em all.”
The box, which has a chance to contain uncommon, rare or foil cards, was sold last week at Huggins & Scott Auctions, with the bidding starting at $20,000, according to Kotaku. That amount of money seems like a lot to pay for a box set, even if it includes some hard-to-find cards, but according to the bidding history surrounding Pokemon cards, that price is actually reasonable.
A holographic Charizard card, for example, sold for $55,000 back in April. You read right — just one card sold for $1,000 less than the entire box of first edition cards.

Beckett.com puts the hefty price tag into further perspective. The collection-focused site compares a first edition Charizard Pokemon card to other rare finds, like “the 1952 Topps Mickey Mantle for baseball and the 1986-87 Fleer Michael Jordan for basketball.”
Another rare card, a Pokemon Illustrator card, also sold for $54,970 back in 2016, almost the same price as the Charizard card. If you didn’t know before, now you know that collecting Pokemon cards is a serious — and seriously lucrative — business. So, if you’ve got some rare Pokemon cards in your collection, hold on to them tight, because they could be worth a lot of money.
