15 Movies Coming Out This Year (And 15 Coming Out In 2019)

15 Movies Coming Out This Year (And 15 Coming Out In 2019)

20 Mandy (2018)

Nicolas Cage movies are a complete gamble these days, but Mandy looks like a return to form for the actor.

The movie is set in 1983. Red Miller (Cage) has fallen for the eponymous Mandy (Andrea Riseborough). Their peaceful existence is shattered when a savage group of mountain cultists destroy their home and leave Red seeking vengeance.

The movie has already premiered at the Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim and it looks like it's going to be a unique and stylish blend of insanity, violence and horror.

The trailer even ends with Nicolas Cage in a chainsaw fight. How could that not make you want to see it?

Mandy opens September 14th.

19 Dumbo (2019)

We don't know if you've noticed, but Disney is on a massive nostalgia trip at the moment. The trend continues with the live-action/CGI version of Dumbo, one of Disney's most beloved animated classics.

Outside of the scene-stealing cuteness of Dumbo, the movie has a great cast including Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito, Eva Green, and Alan Arkin.

Best of all, it's directed by Tim Burton, who will lend his signature weird sensibilities to the almost certainly heartbreaking tale. We can't wait to see what he does with the Pink Elephants sequence.

Dumbo flies into theaters in March 2019.

18 The Meg (2018)

This year will see the historic fight of Stath vs Shark. Jason Statham stars in The Meg, a movie about a supposedly extinct species of gigantic shark known as a megalodon, who suddenly appears and starts doing what sharks do.

Statham plays Jonas Taylor, a diver who's encountered the beast before and is drafted in to use his experience to stop us all from becoming chum.

The movie also stars Li Bingbing, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose ,and Cliff Curtis.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back in the water, The Meg has come along to ruin swimming in the sea for everybody.

The Meg is unleashed August 10th.

17 Star Wars: Episode IX (2019)

Expectation is always sky high for Star Wars movies, but Episode IX (catchier title pending) has a larger weight on its shoulders than usual after the divisive Last Jedi and the underperforming Solo.

Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, John Boyega, and Oscar Isaac are all set to return, but other than the fact that JJ Abrams is directing, Disney is keeping very quiet about it all.

What we do know is that legendary composer John Williams has stated that Episode IX will be the last Star Wars movie he will score, marking the end of an era.

Episode IX is coming to a galaxy near us on December 20th, 2019.

16 Venom (2018)

Sony's attempts at expanding their own non-MCU Spiderverse have often been rather questionable.

There are concerns about this year's Venom solo movie, but Sony is clearly hoping it will be the start of something special.

Tom Hardy plays Eddie Brock, a journalist who happens upon an alien symbiote that bonds to him and grants incredible (suspiciously spider-like) abilities.

The Venom cast is impressive. Not only do we have Tom Hardy as the lead, but we also have Michelle Williams, Woody Harrelson, Riz Ahmed, and Jenny Slate in the mix.

Whether director Ruben Fleischer will deliver the goods on one of Marvel's most popular villains remains to be seen, but all will be revealed October 5th.

15 X-Men: Dark Phoenix (2019)

As one of the most famous stories from the X-Men comics, the Dark Phoenix Saga was always going to be an idea that filmmakers came back to.

There was a half-hearted attempt in X-Men: The Last Stand, but as the movie has been (thankfully) erased from the continuity, it's time for a new team to deal with the Phoenix Force in X-Men: Dark Phoenix.

Sophie Turner reprises her role as Jean Grey, with James McAvoy, Jennifer Lawrence, and Michael Fassbender also set to return.

It's aiming to be a more faithful adaptation of the Chris Claremont story and we'll know if it succeeds February 14th, 2019.

14 Halloween (2018)

The year 2018 has already been a good one for horror, but this year will also see the return of one of the genre's biggest icons.

Michael Myers is back, and forty years after his original horrific holiday spree, he's come back to terrorize Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) all over again.

If you didn't feel a tingle down your spine from John Carpenter's legendary theme when it was used in the trailer, you're made of stronger stuff than us.

Halloween is predictably scheduled for an October 19th release, ready for the big day itself.

13 Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019)

We've commented on great casts a few times in this list, but Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood may have them all beat.

For those keeping score at home, the ensemble cast is comprised of Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Al Pacino, Burt Reynolds, Margot Robbie, Dakota Fanning, James Marsden, Clifton Collins Jr., Michael Madsen, and Timothy Olyphant, to name just a fraction.

A new Tarantino movie is always worth a look, but considering that this one has enough star power to light several cities, it's looking like a must watch.

We still have a lengthy wait for this one, though, as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is slated for an August 2019 release.

12 Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald (2018)

Fans of the wizarding world of Harry Potter won't have to wait much longer for their next magical fix.

The sequel to Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them will take Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and his friends on a darker adventure as they attempt to bring down the escaped dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) under the watchful gaze of a young Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law)

The first Fantastic Beasts movie was a heartfelt, magical movie and was well received by critics and fans alike, so hopes are high they'll manage to pull the same trick twice.

The Crimes of Grindelwald apparates into theaters on November 16th.

11 Spider-Man: Far From Home (2019)

Tom Holland's Peter Parker may not have fared too well in Infinity War, but that's not stopping him from appearing in Homecoming sequel Far From Home.

Far From Home will apparently take the webslinger overseas on a European field trip, with filming beginning in London, England this month.

We know that Holland, Zendaya, Michael Keaton, Marisa Tomei, and Jacob Batalon are set to return, but the big question is over the movie's villain.

Rumors suggest that Jake Gyllenhaal will be playing Mysterio, but nothing has been officially confirmed, although we hope the rumors are true.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is scheduled for a July 5th release next year.
